Reasons GenZ Is Voluntarily Sharing Their Personal Data with Companies

New Data-Sharing Platform Aims to Transform User Compensation

The way people think about sharing their data is evolving. Generation Lab has introduced a platform called Verb.ai, designed to allow users to earn money by sharing their data anonymously. This initiative looks to create a fair system of compensation for individuals by tracking their online behavior, thus providing businesses with valuable insights.

According to Cyrus Beschloss, the CEO of Generation Lab, there’s been a significant issue with companies collecting user data without offering any compensation in return. The goal of this new platform is, essentially, to provide users with transparency regarding how their data is used and ensure that they are rewarded for it.

For a fee of around $50 a month, users can easily set up trackers on their mobile devices in just about 90 seconds. These trackers monitor various activities, including web browsing, purchases, and streaming app usage, while ensuring that financial account details remain private. The data collected helps create what they call a “digital twin” for each user, which businesses can use to better understand consumer behavior.

For example, a political organization interested in understanding where women under 30 find their news could utilize these digital twins to get precise information. Generation Lab likens this process to an MRI machine, contrasting traditional market research—where companies often rely on self-reported data—with a more science-based method of gathering insights.

Interestingly, a substantial segment of Gen Z is open to sharing their personal information, with a reported 88% willing to do so if they receive some incentive. This shift is prompting businesses to rethink their data collection strategies. Beschloss emphasizes the importance of knowing exactly what data users provide and feeling assured about the value they receive in return.

By focusing on actual user behavior instead of relying solely on self-reported data, Verb.ai aims to deliver a clearer picture of consumer preferences. Generation Lab aims to onboard 5,000 users by the end of September, indicating a potential disruption in the market research field. The evolution of data sharing isn’t just about privacy; it’s about establishing a more ethical and transparent way to exchange information.
