Louisiana Senate Race Influenced by Trump
Republican Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) remarked on Sunday that former President Donald Trump’s substantial impact on the Republican Party persists. He pointed out that Trump’s backing played a crucial role in the recent Senate race in Louisiana, contributing to the defeat of incumbent Senator Bill Cassidy.
“Honestly, it was a predictable outcome unless someone was completely oblivious,” Kennedy stated on “Sunday Briefing.” He continued, explaining the polling data from over the past year that indicated Cassidy’s vulnerability. “The president influences congressional members. Julia Letlow’s candidacy, in particular, was significant,” he noted, adding, “Bill was aware of this risk but chose to run nonetheless, and that’s something I respect.”
Letlow and Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming surpassed Cassidy in Saturday’s Republican primary, according to reports.
Letlow secured approximately 45% of the votes, while Fleming garnered around 28%. Cassidy trailed behind with just under 25%. Since neither Letlow nor Fleming received the majority vote, they will now face off in a runoff.
The outcome of the runoff will determine who competes against the Democratic runoff winner in November.
After Cassidy, who had previously voted to convict Trump in his impeachment trial, lost, Trump took to social media, calling Cassidy a “dishonest scourge” and labeling him as “a despicable, awful man.” This commentary aligns with Trump’s continued focus on Cassidy.
Following his defeat, Cassidy delivered a speech that included a subtle jab at Trump, stating, “In a democracy, you sometimes face outcomes that aren’t what you hoped for. You shouldn’t complain or claim the elections were rigged… Thank you to the voters for allowing me to serve as long as I did.”
Kennedy offered additional insights, suggesting that voter anger regarding the elections played a part in the results. “Many voters seemed frustrated. This time around, they were limited in their choices at the polls, adding to the confusion,” he explained. “While Trump’s support absolutely influenced the election, there were various factors at play. Bill’s political situation has been precarious for quite some time, and I don’t think anyone was particularly shocked by the results, especially after Trump made his opinions known.”
