Bold fouls, heated rivalries, reality: Clark-Reese WNBA showdown

Indiana Fever vs. Chicago Sky: WNBA Season Opener

Over the weekend, the Indiana Fever took on the Chicago Sky, marking the beginning of the 2025 WNBA season.

During the third quarter, Fever’s standout player Caitlyn Clark struck her long-time rival Angel Reese on the arm, which led to a controversial foul. An upset Reese quickly reacted, earning herself a technical foul for her verbal outburst.

Post-game, both players tried to brush off the incident. However, fans and commentators are still buzzing about it.

Fox Sports analyst and ex-NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III shared a post on X following the game.

He remarked, “This has been building ever since they faced off in the National Championship Game where Angel Reese started the trolling against Clark.” Jason Whitlock added, “It’s evident.”

In a piece, Reese spoke about “fatigue” that seems pervasive in American culture.

She noted that collaboration has become challenging for her, which is clear given the WNBA offseason developments.

During that offseason, the Indiana Fever hired Stephanie White, whom many consider “one of the most skilled coaches in the WNBA.” They also secured valuable free-agent signings to build a strong team around Clark, including DeWanna Bonner, Natasha Howard, and Sophie Cunningham.

In contrast, the Chicago Sky welcomed first-time head coach Tyler Marsh but made less impactful draft choices and player transfers.

As Jason points out, there’s a clear preference: “Players want to join Caitlyn Clark, but they’re reluctant to team up with Angel Reese.”

He insists this isn’t mere speculation, noting, “Previous teammates from Maryland and LSU didn’t enjoy it much.” For example, Haley Van Lith reportedly found her year playing alongside Reese to be the toughest of her career and decided to transfer.

According to Jason, Reese’s talent—she’s a fantastic rebounder and defender—could make her an effective player in the WNBA. Yet, he argues, her attitude—described as toxic, angry, and selfish—deters others from playing with her.
