Cyril Ramaphosa meets with Trump to restore South Africa’s ties with the US

Ramaphosa’s Visit to the White House

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to meet with President Trump at the White House on Wednesday, aiming to improve the challenging relationship between their countries.

The meeting follows mounting tensions with the Trump administration, which has accused the South African government, led by black leaders, of discriminating against white citizens, expropriating land owned by white farmers, and engaging in acts of “genocide.”

Ramaphosa intends to address what he perceives as misconceptions about his government during this meeting.

According to White House officials, discussions are expected to highlight the importance of condemning politicians who “promote genocide rhetoric” and advocating for the classification of farm attacks as a priority crime by the South African government.

While some white farmers have faced violent home invasions, the South African government maintains that these incidents are part of a broader crime issue, rather than racially motivated.

Additionally, White House sources mentioned that Trump may urge the South African government to address “investor scares” related to racially-based trade restrictions.

Notably, high-tech billionaire Elon Musk, a prominent ally of Trump and originally from South Africa, is also expected to participate in the discussions with Ramaphosa.

Outside the embassy on Tuesday, Ramaphosa expressed optimism about the upcoming meeting with Trump. “Trade relations are the most important thing. That’s what brought us here. We really want to leave the US with a good trade deal,” he said. “We want to strengthen these relationships and foster positive ties between our countries.”

This meeting follows Trump’s earlier initiative to offer a fast-track citizenship to some South African farmers, with the first group of 49 refugees arriving in the U.S. earlier this month.
