Trump mentions Musk during meeting with the president of South Africa in the Oval Office.

Trump Discusses South Africa and Musk

During a recent Oval Office meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, President Donald Trump brought up Elon Musk while addressing the challenges faced by white farmers in South Africa. This conversation included back-and-forth discussions about whether the situation there could be classified as “genocide.” At one point, a reporter asked Trump how the U.S. and South Africa might strengthen their relationship.

Trump expressed that this relationship is of significant importance to him, mentioning that he has personal connections to South Africa, including friendships with professional golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, who were present at the meeting.

Interestingly, while discussing Musk—who hails from South Africa—Trump noted, “I don’t want him to get involved,” perhaps indicating that the dynamics at play are more complex. He chuckled softly, suggesting, “But Elon happens to be from South Africa. This is what Elon wanted. He actually came here on another theme—sending the rocket to Mars—okay?”

Musk, who was in attendance at the Oval Office meeting, has openly criticized his country’s government, referring to the ongoing conflict there as “genocide.” There seemed to be a moment where Trump jokingly suggested that perhaps Musk should “go back to South Africa,” which, well, raised some eyebrows.

In a related note, recent news surfaced regarding Musk-owned X acquiring Grok, an AI chatbot. This development followed complaints about “fraudulent changes” to Grok’s algorithms, which have reportedly focused discussions on race and politics in South Africa.
