Malema’s Response to Trump’s Remarks on South Africa
Julius Malema, leader of South Africa’s Radical Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), reacted sharply to President Donald Trump’s statements regarding “genocide” in South Africa, reiterating his party’s calls to kill white farmers.
On the same day, Trump referenced a video of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, highlighting chants that included “Kill Boer!” and “Shoot to Kill!”
Ramaphosa attempted to clarify that Malema’s rhetoric does not reflect governmental policies. However, Trump countered with claims that South Africa has enacted laws permitting land expropriation without compensation and that there exist racially biased laws affecting white farmers, some of whom are reportedly considering leaving the country.
Malema responded passionately on social media, reaffirming his stance on land expropriation without compensation.
Following his comments, the EFF issued a statement that echoed Malema’s sentiments, asserting that “Kill Boer, kill the farmers! Winning is certainly true!”
Despite Ramaphosa’s attempts to downplay the influence of Malema and the EFF, the party has captured nearly 10% of the votes in recent elections, trailing just behind the similarly radical Umkhonto We Sizwe party. Both parties support seizing land from white farmers.
In an interesting twist, it’s been noted that South Africa has not enforced hate speech laws against Malema’s provocative statements.
