Trump Accepts Boeing 747 from Qatar as Air Force One
Washington: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has agreed to accept a Boeing 747 from Qatar for President Donald Trump’s use as Air Force One, according to the Pentagon.
Sean Parnell, a spokesman for the Pentagon, mentioned that they are “working to ensure proper security measures” for the president’s safety. He also noted that the plane was accepted “in accordance with all federal rules and regulations.”
During his recent trip to the Middle East, Trump justified the acceptance of the gifts as a means to save taxpayer money. He posted on social media, questioning why military and taxpayer resources should be spent on “hundreds of millions of dollars” for planes that could be acquired for free.
However, there are concerns regarding the constitutionality of accepting foreign gifts, particularly with regards to modifications needed for the aircraft to meet security standards. These modifications are expected to incur significant costs and take time.
While meeting with the South African president in the Oval Office, Trump commented on the aircraft donation, stating, “They’re giving the US Air Force jets.”
The Republican president has not issued a national security order for an expedited upgrade, preferring instead to wait for Boeing to finish the new jet he has been developing for years.
