This seems a bit ridiculous…
But here we are. LeBron James, the superstar of the Los Angeles Lakers, recently received an Honorary Doctoral Degree in Public Service from Ohio State University, despite running a school for grades 3 to 8 in Ohio that’s struggling significantly.
The announcement noted, “Born in Akron, Ohio, LeBron Raymond James Sr. is a professional basketball player dedicated to enhancing community engagement and the lives of children and families through education, opportunities, and resources.” This was shared by the Ohio State University Board of Directors.
They added, “Just as he promoted basketball games, LeBron has redefined philanthropy and developed an innovative model for community building in Akron, Ohio.” (Related: Angel Reese mimics Caitlyn Clark like he terrified the “white girl” in TikTok video)
LeBron established the LeBron James I Promise School in 2018. However, recent news revealed that one eighth grader hasn’t passed a state math test since they were in third grade.
According to the latest rankings from US News & World Report, only about 5% of students at the school are proficient in math. In reading, that figure is marginally better at 6%. To put that in perspective, 51% of students across Ohio scored at a proficient level in math, while 57% did in reading.
The LeBron James I Promise School holds just one star from the Ohio Grade Card for achievement, and early literacy received the same rating. Additionally, the school has an absenteeism rate of 38%.
