Transgender Flag Unfurled at El Capitan in Yosemite
In an inspiring act, Patigonia, a star from MTV’s Rupaul’s Drag Race, celebrated a group of LGBTQ activists who displayed a massive transgender flag at the iconic El Capitan rock formation in Yosemite National Park on Tuesday.
“We showcased Yosemite’s Transpride flag and made a statement: Trans people are natural and loved,” said Gonia, a lead organizer of the event. Activists spread the flag as a gesture of solidarity and resistance, emphasizing the importance of representation. According to various reports, this event highlighted the community’s resilience.
Remarkably, the flag measured 55 feet by 35 feet, making it the largest ever unfurled at this significant climbing destination. Reportedly, LGBTQ activists hung the flag between 1,500 feet of El Capitan from 8 AM to 10 AM. Such actions, they argued, were necessary to promote awareness and support for the transgender community.
A spokesperson for Yosemite National Park acknowledged the display of the flag, stating that park officials were aware of the unauthorized event and that the flag was removed soon after. “The National Park Service is looking into the circumstances of this event,” the spokesperson noted, emphasizing their commitment to protecting national parks’ integrity.
The “Trans is Natural” coalition, which was involved in this demonstration, expressed their concerns about the Trump administration’s stance on transgender rights, pointing out that there had been efforts to erase transgender-related content from government communications. One participant, a mountaineer involved in an earlier protest, stated, “Trans people are my friends. I’ll stand up when my friends need help. We need to support trans individuals right now.”
During the demonstration, those who hung the flag displayed symbols of unity on what is known as El Capitan’s “heart shelf.” SJ Jocelyn, another organizer, remarked, “Raising this flag in the heart of El Capitan symbolizes our community’s solidarity and support for all marginalized groups.” Jocelyn emphasized that the existence of transgender individuals is a natural aspect of human diversity, though the sentiment was conveyed with a hint of hesitation.
