California Ex-Cop Allegedly Defrauded Disability System
A former police officer from California is under scrutiny after reportedly raising $600,000 while on full disability leave. Prosecutors allege she maintained an active lifestyle that included multiple ski trips, vacations to Disneyland, pursuing advanced degrees, and attending music festivals.
Nicole Brown, 39, claimed to have suffered a minor head injury during her 2022 arrest. However, she was seen enjoying herself during vacations, seemingly using the injury as a reason for her disability leave. A release from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office highlighted her activities.
At a recent Zoom meeting with members of the Westminster Police Department, shortly after a music festival, Brown appeared in a dimly lit room. She told officers she experienced discomfort looking at the screen, adding a layer of irony to her prior public appearances.
Prosecutors noted that in addition to her festival outings, Brown visited Disneyland, completed two 5K races, and enjoyed skiing and snowboarding at Big Bear and Mammoth. She even attended various youth soccer games and baseball events.
Brown also earned an online master’s degree in organizational leadership from a local university, further raising eyebrows about her claims of incapacitation.
According to the DA’s office, Brown collected a considerable sum of $600,000 through a tax-free salary while also incurring medical expenses.
Facing potential charges of fraud, Brown could receive a sentence of up to 22 years if convicted. The DA’s office indicated that she may have orchestrated a scheme involving her stepfather, Peter Gregory Schumann, a workers’ compensation attorney.
Schumann, 57, allegedly played a significant role in the activities surrounding Brown’s claims and is facing his own felony charges related to the purported fraud spanning eight years. Should he be convicted, he could potentially lose his law license.
