Senate Majority Whip Critiques Democratic Obstruction
On Thursday, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-WY) is scheduled to address the Senate floor, criticizing the high level of obstruction by Senate Democrats regarding President Donald Trump’s nominees.
Barrasso stated, “Senate Republicans are focused on creating a stronger, more prosperous America, while Senate Democrats seem to be caught up in trivial partisan disputes. They lack a clear direction and are being destructive.” This comment comes from a statement shared with Breitbart News.
He pointed out that the Democrats’ most recent tactic is what he termed the “Filibuster Thump” against Trump’s nominees. Since January, Senate Republicans have confirmed 68 of Trump’s nominees, whereas Senate Democrats have obstructed 67 nominations, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio being the only exception.
Barrasso explained how Democrats have been employing the filibuster, a tool they previously sought to eliminate when it came to confirming Biden’s nominees.
“We looked at the nomination records over the last 40 years. Positions that were previously confirmed without issue are now facing filibuster for the first time. Democrats have obstructed the Chief of State Department Protocol, the Secretary of Commerce for industry and safety, and the Secretary of Defense for research and engineering. This isn’t about the nominees’ qualifications; it’s all designed to undermine President Trump,” he said.
He noted that the current Democratic approach has led to the first-ever recorded votes on at least five positions in Senate history, including:
- Chief Protocol of the State Department
- Under Secretary for Commercial Affairs and Security
- Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering
- Ambassador to Panama
- NATO Ambassador
Despite the hurdles, Barrasso asserted that Senate Republicans are proceeding to confirm presidential nominees at an unprecedented pace.
He emphasized, “What Senate Democrats are doing is without precedent in Senate history. This isn’t a principled opposition; it’s outright obstruction. It may slow us down, but we won’t be stopped. Senate Republicans are confirming President Trump’s cabinet at a record-setting speed.”
Additionally, Senate Republicans are committed to countering the Democrats’ attempts to eliminate gas-powered vehicles for American citizens.
