Media Matters under investigation by the FTC for supposed ad collaboration against Musk’s X

FTC Investigates Media Matters Over Musk’s X

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has reportedly initiated an investigation regarding the far-left advocacy group Media Matters, focusing on their actions towards tech billionaire Elon Musk’s platform, X.

A report from the New York Times indicates that the FTC has reached out to Media Matters, inquiring whether they may have illegally colluded with advertisers to undermine Musk’s social media outlet.

Media Matters has not responded to requests for comment from Fox News Digital. An FTC spokesperson also refrained from providing any remarks.

A judge has permitted Elon Musk’s X to proceed with its lawsuit against Media Matters, alleging they misrepresented issues to attract problematic advertising alongside the platform’s content.

In 2023, several major advertisers, including IBM, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, and Paramount, distanced themselves from X after reports emerged suggesting that ads were being placed next to content with anti-Semitic themes.

Musk has filed a lawsuit, asserting that Media Matters has deceived advertisers by “entirely misrepresenting the actual user experience” and manipulating algorithms to prioritize negative content, thus misleading potential advertisers. A representative for X described the report as “deliberately misleading,” suggesting it caused financial damage.

The Texas Attorney General has also opened an investigation into Media Matters, citing “potential misconduct,” while the Attorney General of Missouri has initiated a probe to evaluate “potentially illegal business practices.”

Last August, a Texas court allowed Musk’s lawsuits against Media Matters to advance.
