Media Matters criticizes Trump’s ‘threats’ during reported FTC investigation

FTC Investigation into Liberal Advocacy Group

Liberal advocacy organizations have expressed serious concerns about what they view as a “threat” posed by the Trump administration, following the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) investigation into them.

On Wednesday, the FTC initiated an inquiry into potential issues related to media practices and whether there was inappropriate coordination between the group and advertisers, as reported on Thursday.

According to letters made available by various news sources, the FTC has requested records of communications between the progressive watchdog and its advertisers, as well as correspondence with other watchdog organizations and copies of its budget.

This media inquiry was triggered by a lawsuit in 2023, filed by Elon Musk, a technology billionaire and an advisor to Trump. Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, accused the watchdog group of colluding with advertisers to undermine revenue for X, the social media platform he acquired in 2022.

The ongoing lawsuit is currently in the US District Court for Texas. The media organization has rejected claims of any wrongdoing.

This legal action follows the release of a report detailing how advertisements on X appeared alongside harmful content, prompting several prominent companies to halt their advertising on the platform.

“The Trump administration is characterized by the appointment of right-wing media figures to significant positions, the misuse of federal power, intimidation of political opponents, and efforts to silence critics,” a spokesperson for the media organization stated. “It’s clear that this pattern is repeating itself. Given our accountability in this matter, we remain steadfast in our mission.”

An FTC representative declined to comment on the situation.

FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson indicated the agency’s willingness to investigate such matters. In December, he emphasized the need to address illegal collaborations between online platforms and reaffirmed the importance of protecting competition against advertiser boycotts.
