Harvard’s Response to Trump’s Action Impacting Its Enrollment of International Students

Harvard University Criticizes Trump Administration’s Actions

Harvard University has publicly condemned the Trump administration’s recent decision to rescind its ability to register international students, labeling the action as “illegal.” The Ivy League institution claims this move is a retaliatory tactic that endangers its operations.

The university asserted its dedication to maintaining a diverse international population, highlighting the importance of international students who come from over 140 countries. Harvard reported having more than 6,000 international students enrolled for the 2024-2025 academic year, constituting about 27.3% of its student body. Notably, these students contribute significantly to the university’s revenue through tuition and fees, typically paying more than their domestic counterparts.

In recent months, the Trump administration has intensified its scrutiny of prestigious American universities. Notably, Trump has expressed intentions to combat anti-Semitism on campuses and has criticized former President Biden for allegedly letting Harvard off the hook. The university faced initial repercussions last month when the White House froze $2.2 billion in federal funds. Trump later attempted to negotiate terms to lift this ban, but Harvard declined to acquiesce.

The administration has since communicated with Harvard, restricting its ability to register international students amid an ongoing investigation by the Department of Homeland Security.

Officials have accused Harvard of fostering violence and anti-Semitism and have tied it to alleged collaborations with the Chinese Communist Party. They argue that it is a privilege—not a right—for the university to enroll foreign students and gain the financial benefits associated with their higher tuition.

In a recent statement, Secretary Kristi Noem went further, claiming that the administration is holding Harvard accountable for various controversies surrounding campus activities.

Conditions for Reinstatement of Enrollment

To lift the restrictions, the Trump administration has stipulated six conditions that Harvard must meet. Among these, the university is required to provide comprehensive records, including e-records and audio or video from the past five years, regarding any illegal or violent acts committed by non-immigrant students. Furthermore, Harvard must submit details about any threats made by these students against peers or staff as well as any disciplinary records related to them.
