Kardashian Robbery Trial Verdict Approaching
A Paris court is set to announce its decision on Friday regarding 10 individuals connected to the theft of jewelry valued at millions of euros from American reality star Kim Kardashian during Paris Fashion Week in 2016.
Among those accused are three men in their 30s, along with another man, all facing charges for breaking into a luxurious Paris residence. In a terrifying incident on October 3, 2016, they tied up Kardashian and held her at gunpoint in her bedroom.
The assailant, wearing a police jacket and mask, made off with jewelry worth about 10 million euros, including an 18.88-carat diamond engagement ring valued at £3 million, originally gifted to Kardashian by rapper Kanye West.
The media has dubbed the suspects, who are in their 60s and 70s, as “grandpa robbers.”
Reportedly arriving either on foot or by bike at the Smart Residence in central Paris, they managed to access Kardashian’s room while she was asleep. Once inside, they restrained her and left her on the bathroom floor before fleeing.
State prosecutor Anne Dominic Marville urged the judge not to underestimate the defendants due to their ages, arguing they are seasoned criminals with prior offenses.
She stated, “They planned this meticulously; they knew exactly what they were after,” highlighting the lack of empathy shown towards Kardashian during the incident.
Marville referred to the robbery as a “well-orchestrated” crime and indicated that they had recruited accomplices specifically for this purpose. She argued that a significant sentence should be imposed on each participant, especially on Aomar Aït Khedache, a 68-year-old restaurateur, believed to have orchestrated the crime.
Marville proposed a 10-year sentence for Khedache, who had traveled to Belgium to coordinate the robbery and sell the stolen goods, although he denies being the mastermind.
Prosecutors also recommended that Didier Devrek (69), who reportedly entered Kardashian’s bedroom, receive a 10-year sentence. Yunice Abbas (71) acknowledged his presence at the scene but denied direct involvement, while state prosecutors suggested a similar sentence for Mark Alexandre Boyer, the youngest accused.
Five other individuals, including one woman, have also been implicated in either planning or facilitating the crime.
Earlier this week, state prosecutors suggested a seven-year sentence for Gary Madhar, the brother of Kardashian’s driver, who is accused of sharing information about her Paris activities. Both he and his friend deny the allegations.
Marville recommended eight years for Khedache’s son, Harminy, who is accused of driving on the night of the robbery, though he too denies the charges.
Kathy Grotchen, the only woman on trial, was characterized in court as “a fine grandmother” but also as someone who was aware of her partner’s illicit dealings. She has been accused of facilitating meetings related to the robbery and has denied any wrongdoing. Prosecutors have suggested a six-year sentence for her.
This robbery is noted as one of the biggest heists involving a French individual in the past two decades.
Kardashian, now a billionaire and criminal justice advocate, attended the trial, expressing her deep fear during the robbery. She described feeling threatened and vulnerable when a masked gunman invaded her rented suite in Paris.
At the time, Kardashian was alone in a high-security building—her bodyguard was accompanying her sister, Kourtney, to a club. She used to frequently share her locations on social media, showcasing expensive jewelry, which some believe may have attracted the attention of burglars.
Kardashian remarked that the incident transformed her perception of safety: “I now have up to six security guards with me. We never felt unsafe before this. It changed everything.”
In court, some defendants expressed remorse towards Kardashian.
The verdict is anticipated on Friday evening.
