Expert Claims Elon Musk’s Role in DOGE Was ‘One of the Biggest Brand Failures’

Scott Galloway, a well-known marketing professor and entrepreneur, has raised concerns about Elon Musk’s political activities, suggesting that they have caused “one of the biggest brand disruptions” for Tesla. He pointed out how Musk’s ties with Republicans have negatively impacted Tesla’s reputation and sales in Europe, risking the loyalty of electric vehicle customers.

On the Pivot podcast, Galloway emphasized that Musk’s alignment with groups not supportive of electric vehicles is detrimental. “He alienates the wrong people,” Galloway remarked, noting that a significant percentage of Republicans—around 75%—are unlikely to consider purchasing EVs.

To illustrate his point, Galloway referenced a poll showing Tesla’s reputation plummeting from eighth place in 2021 to 95th. He also highlighted alarming sales figures: Tesla’s sales dropped by 59% in France, 81% in Sweden, and 74% in the Netherlands, among other significant declines across Europe.

Europe has been a vital market for electric vehicles, yet Musk’s political engagements seem to have alienated many potential buyers. Moreover, competitor BYD has now overtaken Tesla in European sales, according to Jato Dynamics, highlighting further trouble for Musk’s company.

“This was definitely one of the biggest brand disruptions,” Galloway commented during the podcast with tech journalist Kara Swisher. He reflected on Tesla’s strong brand image, which is now at risk due to Musk’s political choices and loss of focus on core demographics.

By late April, Tesla announced a staggering 71% drop in profits, with suggestions that Musk would reassess his role in government affairs after discussions with Tesla investors. He mentioned that his responsibilities would involve, to some degree, stepping back from his engagement with the political landscape.

Musk’s Super Political Action Committee has contributed $200 million to support Trump’s election campaign, playing a dual role by both financing and introducing Trump to a younger male demographic that holds him in high regard. Despite receiving criticism, he continued to support Trump’s administration, which he describes as a focus on “government efficiency.”

An independent research group estimated that Musk’s proposed funding cuts could lead to a financial impact of about $135 billion, adding to the complexities surrounding his political entanglements.
