The anticipated matchup between the top seeds of the 2025 French Open remains a possibility after the fourth round concluded on Monday. Both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have secured their spots in the quarter-finals, and they’re seen as strong contenders to win this major tournament.
Joining Sinner and Alcaraz in the quarter-finals are Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic, Lorenzo Musetti, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and Alexander Bublik. Notably, Tiafoe and Paul are the two Americans still in the running, which keeps alive the hope for a US champion in the men’s division.
Coverage of the French Open is being provided by TNT and TRUTV, along with Max, who promise to show all the tournament matches. The games kick off for US audiences on Tuesday and Wednesday.
For American players, advancing has been quite a challenge. Particularly, Paul has a tough draw against Alcaraz, the second seed and the 2024 French Open champion. Alcaraz recently won a four-set match against another American, 13th seed Ben Shelton, with scores of 7-6 (8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Paul, who is the 12th seed, also managed a comfortable win over fourth seed Alexei Popyrin in straight sets during his fourth-round match. Tiafoe, seeded 15th, similarly defeated unseeded Daniel Altmaier in straight sets.
Since Andy Roddick’s victory in 2003, American male players have struggled to win slams. Paul reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open in 2023, which is noteworthy, while his quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros marks his best result to date. Similarly, Tiafoe’s presence here in the quarter-finals is his highest achievement as well.
Sinner, the top seed, secured his place after a straight-set win against Andrey Rublev on Monday, with scores of 6-1, 6-3, 6-4. He will face the unseeded Alexander Bublik in the quarter-finals. Bublik, who upset fifth seed Jack Draper, appears to be playing well, posing a challenge for Sinner.
Djokovic, now the sixth seed, achieved his 100th career victory at Roland Garros with a straight-set win over Cameron Norrie. His next match will be against the formidable third seed, Zverev. Djokovic’s previous opponent, Tallon Griekspoor, had to retire early in the match.
Zverev is still in search of his first Grand Slam title, having made it to the final of the Australian Open earlier this year as well as last year’s Roland Garros. While Djokovic may not be in his prime anymore, he has claimed three titles at the French Open and is eager to add another.
Tiafoe will compete against Musetti, who is the eighth seed, in other quarter-final matchups. Musetti’s progress to the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2024 stands as his best result at the French Open.
Play is set to begin bright and early on Tuesday in the US. Musetti vs. Tiafoe will kick off around 8 am, while Paul and Alcaraz will commence an evening session for US viewers at about 2:30 pm ET. Viewers can catch the action on TNT, along with further analysis on the Tennis Channel and TRUTV, as well as streaming on TNT and Max.
A similar schedule will follow on Wednesday, with Zverev facing Djokovic and Bublik taking on Sinner. On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka will meet Qinwen Zheng and Elina Svitolina will go up against Iga Swiatek on Tuesday. Wednesday will feature Mira Andreva against Loïs Boisson, plus a matchup between Americans Madison Keys and Coco Gauff in the final quarter-finals.
