On Monday, the BBC responded to allegations regarding false reports about Israeli soldiers killing numerous Palestinians in Gaza, initially stated on a US aid site this past Sunday.
Breitbart News reported that Hamas accused Israeli soldiers of firing on Palestinians from aid sites managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), and this claim was echoed by several media outlets including BBC and CNN.
Both Hamas and the United Nations (UN) seem keen to discredit the GHF, which provides assistance outside of Hamas’s control, as they express a lack of trust in its operations.
The GHF, alongside the Israeli Defence Force (IDF), refuted the claims of such an event, while US ambassador Mike Huckabee called on major media to retract their inaccuracies.
In a follow-up, the BBC published an article citing footage initially shared by Al Jazeera on social media that allegedly showed bodies at the GHF Aid Site.
The video was geolocated to Khan Yunis, about 4.5km away from the nearest aid distribution point. The shadows in the footage indicated it was filmed in the evening, which contradicted Rafa’s timeframe related to the shooting.
Local journalists verifying the video confirmed that it did not pertain to any aid distribution event and took place later that day after local time (16:00 GMT).
However, the BBC released another report on Tuesday, asserting that at least 27 Palestinians had been shot “while waiting for assistance,” attributing this to “Gaza authorities” without proper verification of the sensational claims.
The IDF refuted this narrative, explaining:
“Today (Tuesday), while guiding crowds along designated routes to the aid site, IDF forces spotted several individuals acting suspiciously as they strayed from these paths. Warning shots were fired, followed by additional shots directed at individuals who advanced towards our forces despite warnings to retreat.”
The GHF also asserted that the aid distribution occurred without violent incidents.
Israeli government spokesman David Mensah reiterated to reporters that the incident happened half a kilometer from the aid site, involving only a few individuals. He highlighted the absurdity of claims suggesting Israel was harming civilians at aid sites meant for Palestinian access.
Despite Hamas’s repeated claims, no media sources provided clarity on why Palestinian civilians continued to approach areas they believed had been attacked by Israeli forces.
“The IDF did not target civilians around the humanitarian aid distribution zone,” Mensah stated.
He also connected the spread of misinformation to terror attacks against American Jews and pointed out IDF footage showing Hamas, not Israel, firing at Palestinians seeking help since GHF’s operations started that Sunday.
“That’s their last grip on power,” Mensah remarked, adding that Hamas has perpetuated false narratives since the conflict began.
