A man from Wisconsin is facing allegations for allegedly crafting a threatening letter directed at President Donald Trump. This situation seems to be tied to a case involving another individual, who may serve as a witness against him.
Prosecutors revealed charges on Monday against Demetric D. Scott for felony witness intimidation, identity theft, and two counts of bail jumping. His attorney, Robert Hampton III, hasn’t responded to requests for comment from the Associated Press.
I mean, it’s quite a serious situation. Scott is accused of sending a threatening letter that bore the name and return address of Ramontmorales Reyes to both state and federal officials.
Interestingly, Morales Reyes, 54, was arrested by immigration agents on May 21 after dropping his child off at school in Milwaukee. Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem announced the arrest, claiming that he had written the threatening letter towards Trump. This was shared on social media by the White House, alongside images of the letter and Morales Reyes.
But as the investigation progressed, things became a bit clearer. After interviewing Morales Reyes, who struggled with English, it was discovered he had written a different set of handwritten letters than those presented as evidence.
Morales Reyes is considered a victim in an ongoing case against Scott, who is awaiting trial for armed robbery and aggravated battery, with the trial set for July.
It seems law enforcement had been monitoring Scott’s calls from prison where he discussed letters he intended to mail. He was also seen plotting to manipulate the situation, possibly to get rid of his trial, according to the charges. Documents reveal that he admitted to writing the letter.
Meanwhile, Morales Reyes is a dishwasher in Milwaukee, where he lives with his wife and three kids. He recently applied for a U-visa, which assists individuals in the country legally who have been victims of serious crimes, as noted by his attorney, Kime Abdulli.
Abdulli expressed some relief in a statement, mentioning he was glad Morales Reyes was cleared of any involvement in the creation of that threatening letter.
In another update from his deportation lawyer, Cain Olahan, it seems the focus is now on securing custody for Morales Reyes. They are looking for ways to navigate immigration court, as the U-visa application has been backlogged for years. Olahan mentioned they’ll explore other options to ensure he remains with his family.
