White House slams careless reporting on FEMA

White House Responds to FEMA Comments Amid Hurricane Season

On Tuesday, the White House took aim at the media following claims that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is not well-prepared for hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. Reports emerged indicating that acting FEMA administrator David Richardson had told staff he was unaware of this seasonal timeframe.

A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security later clarified that Richardson’s comments were meant to be humorous, emphasizing that FEMA is indeed ready for the upcoming season. “We absolutely understand that it’s hurricane season and take it very seriously, contrary to some media reports,” the spokesperson said.

They went on to assert that federal resources and tax dollars are always aimed at supporting Americans in need. President Biden is deliberating on how emergency aid requirements will be handled, stressing that the federal government won’t allow states to make poor decisions with federal funds and expect bailouts later.

Some GOP Senators argued that a strong federal response is critical, particularly after recent tornado damage in the Midwest.

Nevertheless, this didn’t spare Richardson from scrutiny from Democrats. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reportedly remarked, “It’s hard to understand why he hasn’t been fired yet,” pointing to Richardson’s statements as concerning.

Chuck Schumer further stated, “Disaster response is no laughing matter. If someone doesn’t even know about hurricane season, they shouldn’t be leading FEMA.”

Meanwhile, as discussions continue, the National Maritime and Atmospheric Administration indicated that their forecasts project normal hurricane activity for the Atlantic Basin this year.
