Democrat lawmakers are calling for a boycott of top restaurants in DC during union organizing efforts.

Dozens of Democratic lawmakers are reportedly boycotting six restaurants in Washington, D.C., due to disputes concerning labor practices with two restaurant groups. A representative from Starr, one of these groups, dismissed the boycott as “baseless,” suggesting that most employees aren’t interested in union representation.

“These boycotts could cost our hardworking staff their income,” the representative stated, highlighting concerns over wage loss and job security. It’s unfortunate, really, that groups claiming to advocate for these employees might unintentionally harm them.

The situation escalated when Knightsbridge Restaurant Group, the other business involved, responded more pointedly. The owner questioned how many lawmakers fully understand what they are endorsing. Starr operates well-known establishments such as Osteria Mozza, Occidental, and Le Diplomate, which has been frequented by former presidents like Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Knightsbridge owns notable restaurants, including Rasika and the Bombay Club, but hasn’t commented directly on the boycott.

Earlier this year, Obama was spotted dining at Osteria Mozza, run by the same group embroiled in this controversy. The union orchestrating the boycott, Local 25, represents hospitality workers, claiming hundreds from prominent restaurants are now aligned with them.

Meanwhile, D.C. restaurant workers have organized information pickets outside places like Le Diplomate and Rasika. Lawmakers, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nancy Pelosi, have reportedly signed on to the boycott.

It’s interesting how these actions unfold in a city where politics meets dining, leaving one to ponder what impact such moves might really have on everyone involved.
