Anthony Richardson Faces Challenges as Colts Quarterback

Anthony Richardson is entering his third season, vying for the starting quarterback role, but his path has become more complicated due to an injury. Specifically, he has a shoulder issue with his throwing arm, which has led Colts coach Shane Steichen to confirm that Richardson will miss the upcoming minicamp next week.

According to Steichen, the injury occurred during organized team activities last week. He mentioned, “Doctors and trainers checked it out. He has some aggravation in his AC joint. So, we’re going to let him sit this week. Obviously, he’ll sit for a mini camp. When he comes back, we’re not going to have a set training schedule, but he’ll throw and we’ll take it from there.”

Fortunately, the injury isn’t serious enough to require surgery, although that option isn’t completely off the table yet. Richardson has had a history of injuries over his first two NFL seasons. His initial season ended prematurely after just four games due to a shoulder injury, and last year, he missed two games because of an oblique problem.

The Colts picked Richardson fourth overall in the 2023 draft, hoping he could perform better after struggling to make an impact last year. He managed to throw for only 1,814 yards in 11 games, with a completion rate of 47.7%. That’s definitely not the kind of performance that secures a starting position easily.

This season, the Colts have brought in Daniel Jones, a former Giants quarterback, on a one-year deal. Jones had his own challenges with the Giants before parting ways mid-season in 2024, but he brings experience to the quarterback room. Some fans are now concerned that Richardson’s job could be at risk.

As Richardson focuses on recovery, he’ll also have to contend with securing his position against Jones once he’s back. Steichen described the situation candidly, noting, “It’s frustrating, but he’s fine. So we’re working through it now.” In the meantime, Jones will likely take most of the reps during minicamp while Richardson recuperates.
