Teen Arrested for Alleged Mall Attack Plot in Washington
Law enforcement in Columbia County, Oregon, recently arrested a teenager who reportedly planned a mass shooting using explosives at a shopping mall in Washington.
The FBI announced on Thursday that the unnamed teen was taken into custody on May 22, following a tip received just two days earlier regarding a “detailed and imminent” attack plan.
Upon discovering this alleged threat, the FBI collaborated with local agencies to track down the suspect, which resulted in identifying a Columbia County teenager on May 20.
Sources indicate that the teenager had communicated plans with individuals advocating for violent extremism in online forums.
This young person now faces charges and a federal search warrant was executed on May 22, leading to their arrest.
According to the FBI, the suspect had shown intentions to follow through on a plan that involved maps detailing routes to Kelso’s Three Rivers Mall, located over two hours from Seattle.
The investigations hinted that the individual intended to create panic with an improvised explosive device and had even considered committing suicide at a predetermined spot within the mall.
Authorities noted that the seriousness of this threat warranted quick action. “This plot was so serious that it got our attention,” said Doug Olson, a special agent with the FBI in Portland. “We’ve worked swiftly alongside our partners to thwart this violent plan and safeguard our community.”
The teenager is currently facing state-related charges initiated by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, following the FBI’s initial contact.
The FBI has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, while also encouraging parents to maintain an open dialogue with their children about their online interactions.
