Thwarted Plot in Washington
Federal officials announced on Thursday that they prevented a potentially devastating attack planned by a teenager from Oregon, targeting a mall in southwestern Washington.
The investigation began on May 19 after the teenager made threats that brought the FBI’s attention. Identified as “Joys Columbia County,” the youth had been discussing violent extremist ideas in online chats.
Undercover agents, with judicial approval, made contact with the teen and monitored him. They discovered he had mapped out his attack strategy at the Three Rivers Mall in Kelso, including routes and specific targets. The suspect was said to be considering using chlorine bombs to disorient shoppers and planned to open fire as they exited the cinema before ultimately taking his own life in the process.
The FBI indicated that on May 22, Columbia County Sheriff’s deputies arrested the minor, whose name has not been released due to their age.
“This illustrates the alarming pathways to violence that can develop,” said an FBI representative. “While the plan appeared serious, we were able to intervene before anything could happen.”
That response demonstrated urgency, with Doug Olson from the FBI Portland branch emphasizing the collaborative effort to safeguard the community.
The FBI urged parents to engage in conversations with their children about online behavior and to remain attentive to any suspicious activities.
This arrest followed another significant operation just days earlier, where the FBI raided a home in Lacey, Washington, approximately 70 miles from Kelso. During this raid, two individuals with ties to white nationalist ideologies were taken into custody on weapon charges. Authorities found multiple rifles and other dangerous materials within the residence.
In a separate incident, Daniel John Yong Park, 32, was arrested on Tuesday. He is suspected of shipping materials used in a suicide bombing at a fertility clinic in California. It’s reported that Park fled to Poland shortly after the incident but was extradited and apprehended upon arrival in New York City.
Park, who has shown anti-natalist sentiments, had been using online platforms like Reddit to connect with others who shared his nihilistic beliefs. He allegedly collaborated with a fellow extremist, discussing violent ideologies and expressing a desire to erase life on Earth.
Through these recent events, authorities are addressing the broader concern about the rise of violent extremism and the importance of community awareness and intervention.
