Trump’s Potential Cutbacks on Federal Funding for California
President Donald Trump is reportedly looking into ways to withdraw more federal funding from California, despite Governor Gavin Newsom’s opposition to White House policies even as the state is in urgent need of financial aid.
California is facing a significant fiscal deficit for the second consecutive year, and its Medicaid program is managing to stay afloat primarily through borrowing. Newsom is currently advocating for $40 billion in fire relief from the federal government.
Interestingly, Newsom is simultaneously appealing to the Trump administration for various policies that often seek national injunctions aimed at halting federal actions—not just in California, but across the country.
According to reports, the Trump administration is readying to cancel a wide array of federal funds allocated to California, with the potential to implement these actions as early as Friday. Agency officials have been instructed to identify which grants can be withheld, and it appears that the administration is particularly considering stopping federal grants for institutions like the University of California and the California State University System.
In a statement, White House spokesman Kush Desai criticized California’s energy and immigration policies, suggesting that federal funding shouldn’t support what he called the state’s failed initiatives. However, he added that no final decisions have been made and cautioned against viewing speculation as fact.
Trump has already threatened to cut federal sports funds in California, especially after rejecting federal transgender policies related to women’s sports. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Transportation has hinted at reducing billions in federal spending linked to the state’s troubled high-speed rail projects.
Democrats argue that California should have the right to oppose federal policies, particularly given its substantial contributions to federal revenue while also relying on federal support. They oppose conditioning disaster relief on any changes in policy as well.
In his ongoing dispute with Harvard University, Trump has demonstrated a willingness to track and withdraw federal funding from those who resist the administration’s directives.
