California Union President Detained During ICE Raid

The president of one of California’s largest unions was reportedly detained during an ICE operation in Los Angeles, with the union stating he suffered injuries as well.

In a statement, California President David Fuerta indicated he was detained and received medical assistance but did not disclose further specifics. The union is advocating for his release, amidst reports of multiple ICE actions throughout Los Angeles.

“These tactics instill fear in our communities and undermine the core principles of safety in our cities. We strongly oppose this,” commented Ilse Escobar, who witnessed a confrontation between a protester and an ICE officer just before Fuerta was taken down.

Escobar mentioned, “I told him, ‘You just arrested the union president.'” The union contended that Fuerta was exercising his right to “observe and document” police activities.

They expressed pride in Fuerta’s role as a community observer, emphasizing his history of advocating for migrant workers and standing up for justice, even when risks are involved. “We aim to put an end to the cruel and indiscriminate ICE actions that tear our communities apart, disrupt our economy, and harm all working individuals,” she added. “Millions of workers are essential. We feed the nation, care for our elders, clean our workplaces, and build our homes.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also condemned the ICE operations. In her statement, she expressed her anger over reports of federal immigration enforcement actions in various parts of Los Angeles, reaffirming the city’s pride in its immigrant population.

“This morning we received reports of federal immigration enforcement actions in multiple locations in Los Angeles. As mayor of a proud immigrant city, I am deeply angry at what happened,” she wrote.

Reports of ICE activity were widespread, with individuals in the community noting the presence of ICE agents at several locations, including Home Depot and construction sites across the city. “They’re everywhere,” noted a representative from Union Del Barrio.
