Zelenskyy Challenges Trump’s Views on Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Ukrainian President Voldymi Zelenskyy has dismissed President Donald Trump’s assertion that Russia is genuinely pursuing peace. In an interview on ABC News “This Week,” Zelenskyy indicated that, while ceasefire talks are ongoing, he believes Putin is not interested in ending the war.
“I think, with all due respect to President Trump, that’s just his personal opinion,” Zelenskyy remarked when discussing Trump’s perspective on Putin. “We understand the Russian mentality much better than Americans do. Trust me, I know Putin doesn’t want to stop the war.”
He further contested Trump’s analogy, likening the conflict to two children bickering in a park.
“We don’t play in the park with Russians like two boys,” Zelenskyy said, recounting the tragic story of a Ukrainian man who lost his wife and three children to a missile strike. “Putin is not a child; he’s a murderer who came to the park to kill the kids,” he added, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
This criticism follows Trump’s remarks made during a recent visit from German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz, where he suggested that sometimes letting two children fight can be better than intervening immediately.
Trump had earlier suggested that his conversation with Putin highlighted, “Maybe you have to continue to fight and suffer a lot,” which he felt paralleled children’s conflicts.
As it stands, Ukraine and Russia have engaged in two rounds of peace negotiations, yet tangible outcomes remain elusive.
