Jalen Brunson Breaks Silence Following Coach Dismissal
Jalen Brunson has finally shared his thoughts. The standout guard took to Instagram on Sunday and made headlines by parting ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday.
In his post, Brunson included an image of himself with a heart emoji and a finger emoji next to Thibodeau.
Just last week, Brunson had openly supported Thibodeau, who had been with the team for three years. This came after the Knicks were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, losing the series in six games.
While it was the Knicks’ first appearance in the conference finals in 25 years, they entered as favorites, yet couldn’t advance past the first round.
When asked if he believed Thibodeau was the right person to lead the Knicks to greater heights, possibly even to the championship or NBA Finals, Brunson seemed caught off guard by the question.
“Is that really what we’re asking now? I mean, I believe he is the right guy,” Brunson remarked after the Knicks’ 125-108 loss on May 31. “Yes. Come on,” he added, emphasizing his support.
Thibodeau was hired before the 2020-21 season and had been the team’s most successful coach this century, yet he was let go.
Throughout his tenure, Thibodeau coached 400 regular-season games with the Knicks, ranking fourth in the franchise’s history. He became the first coach since Jeff Van Gundy to lead the team to four playoff appearances within five years.
Thibodeau’s playoff record of 24-23 gives him the fourth-highest postseason win percentage in Knicks history—an impressive feat considering he didn’t guide the team to the NBA Finals.
When looking back at the franchise’s history since its inception in 1947, only a few coaches, like Red Holtzman, Pat Riley, and Van Gundy, have achieved notable success alongside others like Joe Raptis, who coached from 1948 to 1956.
As the Knicks look forward, their search for a new head coach is anticipated to gain momentum in the coming days. This change signals a significant shift, as the pressure mounts to steer the franchise toward a new era after such a long period of stagnation.
