Outraged by Trump's Use of National Guard

Response to National Guard Deployment in Los Angeles

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has described the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles as “a dangerous escalation intended to cause confusion,” without directly condemning the protests against immigration enforcement agents.

Harris, who ran for president in 2024 but did not succeed, addressed the issue over 30 hours after riots erupted as individuals attempted to enforce immigration laws by targeting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

“Los Angeles is my home,” she stated. “Like many Americans, I’m observing the scenes unfolding in the city. The decision to deploy the National Guard is a troubling escalation that spreads panic and division, alongside the recent ICE actions throughout Southern California and beyond, and reflects the cruel and calculated agenda of the Trump administration.”

This statement followed a memorandum from Trump that authorized the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops aimed at controlling the unrest.

Harris continued to express her criticism of the Trump administration, arguing that their policies extend beyond mere public safety concerns, claiming they also “take away fear.” She emphasized how fear affects the community advocating for dignity and legitimate processes.

“Protest is a powerful tool,” she added, pointing out that it’s crucial for justice. According to LAPD, the mayor, and the governor, demonstrations supporting immigrant communities have largely been peaceful.

However, footage circulating on social media contradicts the notion of peace, showing instances of protesters throwing rocks, vandalizing federal properties, and even setting vehicles on fire.

Other Democratic officials, like California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, have also criticized the decision to federalize 2,000 National Guard troops to address the violence.

Bass described the deployment as a “chaotic escalation,” expressing concern about the real fear gripping the city and emphasized that it puts local neighborhoods at risk. She urged protesters to stay peaceful.

On Saturday, Newsom referred to the move as “deliberately inflammatory,” suggesting that increasing the number of National Guard members only heightens tensions.
