Israeli Forces Detain Aid Vessel Heading to Gaza

Early Monday, Israeli forces intercepted an aid ship en route to Gaza, which included climate activist Greta Samberg among its passengers.

The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed the capture of the vessel, named Madleen, and stated that it, along with all individuals aboard, was diverted to Israeli waters.

A clip shared by the ministry on social media features an Israeli naval officer speaking to the crew of the ship, which they humorously described as a “selfie yacht.” The navy instructed the vessel to adjust its course to steer clear of restricted maritime areas. The officer emphasized that any aid must come through established channels.

According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, all passengers were reported to be “safe and unharmed,” with provisions like sandwiches and water being supplied during the detainment. “The show is over,” they stated, asserting their intent to halt the so-called Freedom Fleet Union during the lead-up to its arrival.

Samberg, a 22-year-old from Sweden, departed last week aboard Madleen, alongside eleven other activists, including Palestinian performers. The group aimed to deliver aid and draw attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Israeli officials noted that the amount of aid on the ship was minimal—comparable to less than one truckload. The Foreign Ministry pointed out that any supplies considered inadequate were destined to be rerouted through legitimate humanitarian services.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has ordered the IDF to compile footage related to participants in the Gaza-bound fleet, underlining ongoing tensions surrounding maritime assistance to the region.
