Discussion on Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Rex Heuermann

Friends of the Gilgo Beach serial killer, Rex Heuermann, claim that he specifically targeted sex workers. Heuermann, 61, is accused of luring these victims by offering money for sex, only to kill them and dispose of their remains along the Ocean Parkway, not far from his Long Island residence.

“I don’t think it’s because he’s hated by sex workers. They were just easy targets for him,” said David Jimenez, who became friends with Heuermann in 2006.

Jimenez also mentioned, “I’m not a psychiatrist, but I believe the fact that they’re sex workers isn’t the primary reason he killed them. It’s more about his desire to kill.” He pointed out that these women were just the easiest prey, suggesting that perhaps they were less likely to be missed.

He further reflected, “Maybe no one cares about them. It’s so distorted that I honestly can’t make sense of it.” This sentiment is shared in Jimenez’s new documentary titled “The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets.”

Prosecutors allege that Heuermann has killed seven women since 1993, with their remains discovered between 2010 and 2011. He has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. The women believed to be his victims include Maureen Brailerd Burns, Sandra Costilla, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mac, Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Costello.

In their investigation, police uncovered disturbing search histories on Heuermann’s computers, revealing a fascination with various forms of violent and exploitative content. Yet, Jimenez emphasized that, before Heuermann’s arrest in July 2023, there were no clear signs of his dark side. He described Heuermann’s family background, noting that both his dad and father worked in construction and enjoyed hunting together.

Interestingly, Heuermann is also an avid gun collector, with police seizing approximately 400 firearms from his residence. Jimenez remarked, “He hid his activities from me. If I had known, I would have confronted him.” It’s reported that Heuermann planned his crimes to coincide with his family being away, leading many to believe that the full scale of his criminal behavior hasn’t yet been fully uncovered.

Jimenez noted that Heuermann appeared to care for his wife, Asa, and didn’t seem to harbor any overt animosity toward women. “He didn’t express hatred or make derogatory comments about women,” he stated.

As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what additional revelations may surface regarding the events surrounding the Gilgo Beach murders.
