Trump's decision to send the National Guard to LA is described as the 'true emergency'

National Guard Deployment in Los Angeles Sparks Debate

The editorial board of The New York Times stated on Sunday that the key issue regarding the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles was President Donald Trump’s decision to send in the National Guard to manage the situation.

The editorial highlighted that the National Guard is typically called upon in the face of natural disasters, civil disturbances, or public health emergencies. Interestingly, they pointed out that there seemed to be no immediate crisis in Los Angeles, despite the ongoing protests against federal immigration policies.

Over the weekend, the National Guard was deployed to California amidst escalating anti-ICE riots. These protests turned violent, with participants damaging property and confronting law enforcement officers.

The Times editorial argued that deploying the National Guard might have exacerbated the very tensions it aimed to alleviate.

Senator Criticizes Trump’s Decision

Senator Corey Booker openly criticized Trump’s actions, referring to the protests as “peaceful” and questioning the necessity of the National Guard’s presence.

Historically, previous presidents have approached military involvement in domestic issues cautiously, as there’s a recognition—perhaps a fearful one—that the legal basis for such actions is often murky. The editorial urged Congress to engage in discussions regarding this matter without delay.

Meanwhile, the FBI has launched an investigation into individuals accused of assaulting federal officers and damaging government property during the protests.

One incident involved a suspect who allegedly assaulted law enforcement by throwing a rock, resulting in injuries to federal officials and damage to vehicles.

The New York Times decried the violence exhibited by some protesters but maintained that sending the National Guard was not a solution.

The editorial further noted, “Trump’s orders do not establish law or order. Instead, they seem like a strong overreaction.” This intervention, marked by the use of tear gas, sent a tense message about Trump’s approach to law enforcement and public order.

On Sunday evening, the Los Angeles police designated the ongoing protests as an “illegal rally,” citing a failure to disperse from the downtown area.

California Governor Gavin Newsom voiced his disapproval of Trump’s deployment of the National Guard, suggesting that it only worsened the situation. He remarked, “Let’s clarify: Local authorities didn’t require assistance.”

During a press conference, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell referred to the violence against law enforcement and the riots as “disgusting.”
