Don Bacon opposes Trump's proposal to cut funding

Rep. Don Bacon’s Stance on AIDS Relief Funding

Rep. Don Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska, has taken a firm stance against supporting the AIDS relief initiative under the Trump administration, despite his support for the program itself. He recently conveyed to the President that he does not intend to back a proposed funding cut.

According to the President’s suggested budget adjustments, there are significant cuts planned for global health programs. Specifically, it suggests withdrawing millions from initiatives like the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). “I told them I was no,” Bacon explained, emphasizing the importance of continuing to fund AIDS prevention, which he described as a commendable legacy initiated by George Bush.

In a recent post on X, Bacon highlighted the significance of PEPFAR, labeling it “a noble program where America can be proud of its funding.” However, in a statement to Fox News Digital, he expressed reservations, stating, “If PEPFAR does its best, I’m no,” and he stressed the need for further clarification on the cuts being proposed.

Details emerging about the withdrawal package reveal a potential $400 million decrease from PEPFAR, which currently allocates $4.4 billion annually for bilateral assistance to various countries, including those not aligned with American interests. A White House official remarked that the proposed cuts eliminate “wasted programming” but will not hinder life-saving assistance.

Bacon’s unique perspective as the sole House Republican opposing a recent motion to rename the Gulf of Mexico reflects his willingness to voice disagreement based on feedback he’s received, describing the move as “stupid.” He noted that others had urged him to vote in favor simply to avoid conflict.

Despite pressures from GOP leadership to silence dissent, Bacon insists that he will speak out when he feels it’s crucial. “I like what the president did at the border,” he stated, while also expressing a desire to protect the integrity of the party. “I want to fight for the soul of our party,” he said, suggesting that he’s cautious about following trends that he believes are misguided.

Bacon, who has served in the House since 2017, continues to navigate the complexities of party dynamics while advocating for policies he believes are in the best interest of the public.
