Cuba and Venezuela Criticize U.S. Travel Restrictions as 'Racist'

Travel Restrictions Spark Outcry from Cuba and Venezuela

Over the weekend, the governments of Cuba and Venezuela voiced strong disapproval of new travel restrictions imposed by President Trump on U.S. citizens, which came into force on Monday.

Both nations have faced criticism for human rights violations against their citizens, prompting many to seek refuge from communist and socialist regimes. They specifically targeted Secretary of State Marco Rubio, labeling the travel restrictions as “racist” and “hateful.” It’s worth noting that Rubio, a Cuban American, often finds himself in the crosshairs of Castro’s ire toward U.S. officials.

Recently, Trump enacted a series of travel limitations affecting immigrants and non-immigrants from 12 specified nations, which included tighter visa regulations for seven countries, Cuba and Venezuela among them.

The restrictions, which took effect at 12:01 AM EDT on June 9, 2025, aim to address persistent abuses in the U.S. immigration system. These abuses are reportedly linked to individuals tied to the Castro regime in Cuba as well as the Maduro regime in Venezuela. Of particular concern are the cases of those tied to oppressive regimes arriving in the U.S. under false pretenses, threatening legitimate political refugees fleeing tyranny.

Trump has cited ongoing issues, such as the lack of cooperation from the Cuban government in law enforcement and detailed documentation, as reasons to restrict visas for Cuban nationals. In Venezuela, he highlighted the absence of effective governmental bodies to issue passports and other civil documents.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla condemned the travel restrictions via social media, labeling them “racist” and asserting they serve the “personal agenda” of Secretary Rubio.

Rodriguez Parilla claimed that these new entry bans harm familial connections between Cubans and undermine various exchanges, from personal relationships to academic collaborations.

In a separate social media post, he emphasized that Cuba’s inclusion on the restricted list benefits anti-Cuban politicians who exploit national grievances for their own gain, arguing that these restrictions further damage bilateral relations.

On Saturday, Rodriguez Parilla shared another post connecting the restrictions to Rubio’s supposed agenda, which he described as grounded in manipulation and deceit.

Cuba’s Deputy Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cocio Dominguez echoed these sentiments, claiming the U.S. is actively trying to “attack” Cuba through travel restrictions, which undermine family, academic, and cultural ties. He accused anti-Cuban politicians of fabricating these limitations.

On the Venezuelan side, the Socialist government condemned the restrictions in a statement that characterized them as part of a campaign aimed at stigmatization and intimidation against Venezuelans. Like their Cuban counterparts, they allege that Secretary Rubio is behind these actions, representing a misguided hatred for Venezuela and its people.

The statement from the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry claimed the measures showcased a blatant disdain for the population, exacerbated by the far-right’s influence over U.S. foreign policy.

The Maduro administration urged Venezuelans not to travel to the United States and described the country as a “dangerous” place lacking human rights protections.

In a recent broadcast, Diosdado Cabello, a high-ranking official in Venezuela, criticized the travel restrictions, insisting that being in the U.S. poses significant risks, not just for Venezuelans but for anyone. He expressed contempt for U.S. policies, pinpointing them as fascist.

In a similar vein, the Democratic Unification Platform (PUD), a coalition of opposition parties in Venezuela, called for the removal of their country from the restricted list. They argued that the people of Venezuela are advocating for democracy and human rights and deserve support rather than punitive measures.

They also expressed hope that U.S. authorities would recognize the distinction between those genuinely seeking refuge and those complicit with the Venezuelan regime when enforcing immigration policies.

In closing, they reiterated their commitment to liberating Venezuela from tyranny, thanking the Trump administration for their support in upholding democratic values in the region.
