Fetterman Critiques Los Angeles Riots
Democratic Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania has expressed his condemnation of the recent riots in Los Angeles, cautioning his party about the dangers of not clearly denouncing “anarchy and true confusion.”
“I am negatively representing freedom of speech, peaceful demonstrations, and immigration, but that’s not the case,” Fetterman stated on X. He emphasized that the chaos unfolding is not reflective of peaceful protest.
His statement continued: “This is anarchy and true chaos. My party loses moral high ground when it fails to condemn violence against law enforcement or property destruction.” He included an image featuring a shirtless masked individual waving a Mexican flag amidst flames.
Fetterman was reportedly at Butterworth, a popular magazine spot in Washington, D.C., when he made these remarks. Tech magnate Elon Musk applauded Fetterman’s denunciation, responding with American flag emojis, perhaps indicating a shared concern over the situation.
This commentary came in the midst of a clash between President Trump and California’s Democratic leadership regarding Trump’s decision to federalize the California State Guard to manage the unrest in Los Angeles.
Protests have surged in several areas, largely in opposition to the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement strategies. One target was a Home Depot in Paramount, linked to ICE operations.
By the next day, some of these protests resulted in violent confrontations between attendees and federal authorities in Paramount. In response to escalating tensions, the Trump administration initially deployed 2,000 troops and later added another 2,000 to restore order.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced plans to send 700 Marines to the area on Monday to help manage the unrest.
California leaders, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, have criticized the federal government’s military mobilization and have urged citizens to avoid violent reactions against Trump’s immigration policies.
In addition, Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta, both Democrats, filed a lawsuit on Monday aimed at reversing Trump’s directive to federalize the state’s National Guard.
Fetterman has shown no hesitation in addressing members of his own party, particularly on issues surrounding Israel and immigration policy. Near the end of the Biden administration, he expressed support for measures aimed at enhancing border security.
