Christopher Kepner stood tearfully as he accepted his deceased daughter Anna’s high school diploma, a poignant moment following her tragic murder by her stepbrother during a family cruise.
Footage captured the emotional scene at Temple Christian School in Florida, where Christopher received a heartfelt standing ovation. “It was tough,” he remarked, reflecting on the bittersweet occasion. “It was very difficult to do that for her.”
Attending the ceremony were Anna’s family members, including her stepmother, Shawntel Kepner. The school and fellow classmates paid tribute to Anna, with her parents wearing shirts adorned with blue butterflies, a nod to her favorite color.
Shawntel, in a gesture of love, set up Anna’s senior table, beautifully decorated with photographs chronicling Anna’s journey and friendships.
Anna, a committed Christian, had only recently been baptized and was actively pursuing a path to join the military—having completed her entrance test and speaking with recruiters.
According to federal prosecutors, Anna, just 18, was murdered in November by her stepbrother, Timothy Hudson, while their family was on a Carnival cruise in the Caribbean. Anna’s vibrant spirit shone through as a varsity cheerleader and gymnast, but her life was cut tragically short when she was found deceased in their cabin, wrapped in a blanket and wearing a life jacket.
Authorities reported that Anna had been strangled and sexually assaulted.
Timothy, who allegedly had an unhealthy obsession with Anna and had previously tried to assault her, initially faced juvenile charges. However, the case has since moved to adult court, where a grand jury has indicted him.
His trial for first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse is set for September, and he has pleaded not guilty.
Christopher expressed his anger over the fact that his son-in-law has been living with his uncle since his arraignment, under pretrial release with an electronic ankle monitor. It’s been a source of pain for the family, as Christopher and Shawntel have severed ties with Hudson.
“The situation is very painful and complicated for the whole family,” Christopher said. He previously indicated that he would not attend the trial, wishing to avoid reliving the traumatic events surrounding Anna’s death.
