Schumer Criticizes Trump’s Immigration Response

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed strong disapproval of President Donald Trump’s handling of the illegal immigration riots in Los Angeles, emphasizing the threat to American democracy.

When prompted about Senator John Fetterman’s comments on the violence from the protests, Schumer described the chaos as “ridiculous” and insisted that it should never happen. He noted that violence and lawbreaking should be met with full prosecution.

Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, believes that failing to condemn such disorder undermines moral authority.

Schumer also called for the federalization of the California State Guard while criticizing Trump’s decision to send Marines to assist in the situation. He warned that using military forces against American citizens is not only provocative but jeopardizes the foundations of democracy.

On the other hand, Senator Roger Wicker, a Republican and chairman of the Armed Services Committee, raised similar concerns during a party press conference while discussing the military budget. He suggested that if a crisis occurred in Mississippi, the response would likely be very different, and the governor would seek extensive support.

Wicker noted that Mayor Karen Bass seems to have a positive working relationship with U.S. military officials. He remarked on Governor Gavin Newsom’s approach to the riots, suggesting he may have made “political errors.” Wicker implied that in cases of severe violence, leaders would typically welcome all assistance available.

Defending his actions, Newsom challenged criticism, including comments from former Border Patrol Chief Thomas Homan encouraging his arrest for the handling of the riots.

In reaction to Schumer’s remarks, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson accused Newsom of enabling a violent situation in Los Angeles that led to attacks on law enforcement and destruction of property. She argued that President Trump rightfully intervened to protect federal law enforcement when local leaders failed to safeguard citizens.
