Conservatives criticize California senator for interrupting press conference

Conservative voices on social media criticized Senator Alex Padilla from California for interrupting a Homeland Security press conference in Los Angeles while Congress was still in session. The event proceeded without him after he was asked to leave, and Secretary of Homeland Security, Christy Noem, acknowledged she did not know him personally.

Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva expressed his displeasure, tweeting, “This is embarrassing [Padilla]. Don’t hold back your anger. Where were you when Leos was attacked? Is that covered up? #FactsMatter.”

In a somewhat chaotic moment, reports suggested that Senator Padilla was forcibly removed from the press conference, with claims that he was arrested. Amid the ongoing tension, he had also missed several Senate votes during the week.

Relations between California leaders and the Trump administration have been increasingly strained, particularly due to enforcement operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which have led to protests in the area. In light of these tensions, President Trump deployed National Guard troops to safeguard ICE agents, despite opposition from Governor Gavin Newsom, who described the move as both unprecedented and a threat to democracy.

Governor Newsom remarked, “Trump is acting like a tyrant,” highlighting his concerns about the administration’s actions.

Following the incident, Padilla’s office clarified that he was not in police custody. DHS Deputy Director Tricia McLaughlin confirmed a later meeting between Padilla and Secretary Noem occurred after the altercation, and they exchanged contact information.

The FBI later issued a statement regarding the event, explaining that Senator Padilla had been briefly detained by a Secret Service agent during the press conference due to disruptions, with FBI support present. It was also noted that he was not wearing his Senate security pin at the time.
