Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman critiqued the more left-leaning factions of his party for opposing Israel, while also addressing Iran, emphasizing what he sees as a vital interest for the Jewish state. He stated on “Real Time with Bill Maher” that he believes, “There were no war crimes. This was an existential war. Can we really rebuild Gaza with Hamas still in power?”
Fetterman expressed his frustration that Democrats have lost a significant debate, siding with a government whose values, in his view, do not represent what many hold dear in the U.S. He previously mentioned the pro-Israel faction within the Democratic Party, noting that it lost its voice in this discussion.
On a related note, Israel conducted a preliminary strike against Iran earlier in the week, targeting key figures in the theocratic regime, along with military infrastructure linked to their nuclear capabilities.
There’s a prevailing belief that Iran possesses crucial nuclear facilities, including the notorious Ford Site, which is fortified underground. Following the strike, there were retaliatory ballistic missile launches targeting Tel Aviv and other locations.
Israel has accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, a claim Iran has consistently denied. Although the Trump administration had previously negotiated a nuclear deal with Iran, new talks were reportedly set for Sunday before the attacks altered those plans.
“We must fully support actions against Iran. We can’t let them develop nuclear weapons,” Fetterman asserted to Maher. He continued, highlighting that Israel’s efforts were essential to dismantling threats like Hezbollah and Hamas, suggesting they have a crucial opportunity to neutralize Iranian nuclear facilities.
Israel’s actions appear to be part of a broader strategy to weaken regional proxies, similar to last year’s assault on Hezbollah operatives, which significantly diminished their capabilities. Concurrently, operations in the Gaza Strip have been impacting Hamas’s strength, and broader regional tensions are evolving amidst ongoing conflicts.
Despite facing backlash from progressive critics regarding his views on Israel’s military strategies, Fetterman reaffirmed his stance. “I don’t think Israel has committed all sorts of war crimes. Labels like genocide have become watered down,” he remarked.
While Maher often critiques leftist perspectives, he maintains an affinity for Fetterman, who gained popularity in the progressive movement after defeating Dr. Mehmet Oz in 2022 for the Senate seat previously held by Pat Toomey. Fetterman’s campaign was notable, especially given his recovery journey from a stroke.
However, some progressives in his party have grown discontent with his pro-Israel position, as well as his support for tighter border security. “I feel some in my party want to paint me in a negative light,” he said, acknowledging the friction stemming from his stance on Israel and border issues.
Regardless, Fetterman insists he remains a Democrat, opposing many of Trump’s key initiatives, including substantial budgetary proposals. “I won’t support debt increasing to $40 trillion, which poses significant risks,” he mentioned, emphasizing his resistance to cuts in Medicaid.
“Much of the turmoil since Trump took office has been troubling,” he added. “But if certain measures pass, it could drastically reshape our nation, affecting millions.”
