Fetterman and Maher Discuss Anti-ICE Protests in Los Angeles
Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania and Bill Maher, host of “Real Time,” shared their thoughts on the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles during a discussion on Friday. They both noted how the chaotic scenes from the riots have rapidly spread on social media, with Maher commenting on the potential advantages for former President Trump.
Maher highlighted the backlash Fetterman received from some on the left after he voiced condemnation of the violence occurring in Los Angeles. He criticized the reaction, suggesting it doesn’t help the Democratic Party at all.
On Monday evening, Fetterman made a strong statement on X, condemning the riots with striking images of rioters atop vehicles, brandishing a Mexican flag amid flames.
“I totally agree. That image of a guy holding a Mexican flag with a burning Waymo in the background? That’s definitely going to favor Trump in ads,” Maher remarked.
Fetterman nodded in agreement, stating that the majority of Americans don’t want to witness Los Angeles “blazing twice in just six months.” His comments reflected a concern for the optics of such situations.
Reflecting on the broader political implications, Maher asked rhetorically whether voters in Scranton might react to such troubling visuals. He emphasized that Fetterman’s perspectives on free speech and immigration still align with fundamental Democratic principles. He suggested that criticism of Fetterman arises from his perceived lack of “progressiveness,” indicating that many today don’t fully grasp those terms.
Maher identified himself as an “old-fashioned Democrat,” a sentiment Fetterman echoed. “That’s exactly it,” Fetterman replied. “Your values haven’t really changed; perhaps it’s the party itself that has shifted. It’s clear you’re highlighting these issues, and of course, facing political backlash for doing so.”
