Nationals Manager Defends Coaching Amid Struggles
Nationals manager Dave Martinez is clear about where not to place blame during the team’s recent struggles.
Following Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Marlins, which marked Washington’s seventh straight defeat, Martinez emphasized that he can’t fault the coaching staff for the team’s offensive difficulties.
“It’s never in coaching,” Martinez commented. “It’s not coaching. Coaches work hard every day. I’m not pointing fingers at them. They put in the effort. The preparation happens beforehand.”
Currently sitting fourth in the National League East, the Nationals have struggled, posting a batting average of just .227 since early June, which puts them third to last in the league.
Furthermore, Washington ranks last in the MLB for walks this month, with only 30, and has a dismal slugging percentage of .267.
At 60 years old, Martinez has a wealth of experience, having played in MLB for 16 seasons, and he noted he never blamed a coach during his playing days.
“I’ve been around this game a long time,” he added. “We never threw a coach under the bus. We put in the effort to improve ourselves. Coaches provided us with the insights we needed. The players understand the game.”
During the recent game, the Nationals had a rough day at the plate, going only 10-for-2 with runners in scoring position, despite having a bases-loaded opportunity in the ninth inning.
“These coaches are working hard,” Martinez stated. “And the players recognize that. Ultimately, it comes down to the players taking responsibility for their performance on the field.”
“We can’t hit for them. We can’t catch or throw for them. They need to step up and play the game the right way.”
