Trump Marks 250th Anniversary of the US Military with Parade

Washington – President Donald Trump made remarks during a significant military parade held to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the US military.

During the event, Trump either sat or often stood to salute the troops, alongside First Lady Melania Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The crowd, a mix of veterans, families, and supporters, gathered in downtown DC donning “Make America Great Again” hats and patriotic attire to celebrate Father’s Day.

As Trump arrived, the audience welcomed him with applause, chanting “America!” His introduction included a gun salute. Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance also received considerable cheers.

Before the parade commenced, live music filled the air, with the crowd moving to the rhythm while enjoying the summer heat. Amidst the festivities, attendees sang “Happy Birthday” as the parade kicked off, expressing their support with chants of “We Love Trump.”

The parade commenced near the Lincoln Memorial and concluded at the Washington Monument around 9:30 PM. This event not only celebrated the military’s history, established a year before the Declaration of Independence, but it also aligned with Flag Day and Trump’s 79th birthday.

Dubbed part of Trump’s “Task Force 250,” the event was initiated by an executive order in January to mark the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence on July 4, 2026.

The parade featured aerial displays by the Army Golden Knights parachute team, historical World War II jeeps, and active duty members waving at the crowds along Constitutional Avenue.

However, the celebration unfolded amidst ongoing protests in Los Angeles against the Trump administration’s measures aimed at deporting illegal immigrants, sparked by heightened tensions following Israel’s recent military actions in Iran.

Weather predictions warned of thunderstorms earlier in the day, adding uncertainty to the festivities.

In response to the parade, protests had been organized in major cities across the country. Reports indicated plans for demonstrations in DC, termed “equity marches,” alongside other rallies.

Security was notably tight, with Secret Service agents, police, and military personnel monitoring the entrance points and mingling among the attendees. Participants also went through metal detectors before accessing the parade route.

A “No Kings” protest occurred on Saturday as activists voiced their concerns across various cities, including Alexandria and Arlington in Virginia.

Trump had addressed the protests at a recent bill-signing event, asserting, “I don’t feel like a king. I go through difficulties to have things approved.” He further highlighted, “No, we are not kings.”

Previously, Trump warned that any potential protesters at the parade would encounter “very heavy forces,” indicating heightened security measures in anticipation of dissent.

The parade was showcased as the “largest” military display in US history, according to the administration. Secretary of Defense Hegseth noted the importance of honoring those who served, emphasizing pride in the military’s legacy during the commemorative event.

“We owe our freedom to those who have fought for it since the dawn of our nation,” said Vince Haley, director of the White House National Policy Council.

Approximately 6,600 soldiers were expected to attend the parade, which featured 150 military vehicles and 50 aircraft, marking a grand display for the occasion.

The parade’s significance was heightened by recent geopolitical developments, with Israel’s military actions against Iran, raising tensions as the region remains unsettled.

As Trump noted on social media prior to a meeting with advisors, he had previously issued a deadline to Iran regarding negotiations, highlighting the ever-evolving political landscape during this momentous event.
