Misleading ICE raid rumor from a California city councilmember disrupts popular flea market and negatively affects local vendors

Flea Market Empty Following False ICE Raid Rumors

The well-loved outdoor flea market in California has seen a significant decline in visitors after misleading rumors regarding immigration and customs enforcement raids circulated, largely fueled by Fresno city councillors.

Fresno Councillor Miguel Arias raised alarms during Thursday’s council meeting about a supposed impending ICE operation at the Cherry Avenue Auction, which usually attracts crowds from the local community every weekend.

“This weekend, ICE is reportedly planning a large-scale immigration raid at Cherry Auction in Fresno, so we advise our immigrant community to steer clear of the area,” Arias warned.

The councilman’s statement quickly caught fire on social media, leading many residents from Fresno and Easton—the areas surrounding the market—to heightened concerns. One individual was even spotted about a block away from the market, underscoring the anxiety the warnings had generated.

Despite the panic, the Cherry Avenue Auction clarified that they had “no knowledge of any planned ICE operation” and indicated that “no official notice had been received.” They expressed confusion over how councillors could claim insider knowledge about potential raids in their jurisdiction.

Many vendors faced disappointment over the lack of customers at what is typically a bustling market. As the weekend progressed, they began to fret over how to recoup lost earnings. “I’m really struggling today. This is my primary source of income, and it’s one of the most important days for me,” lamented one vendor.

Others echoed similar frustrations regarding Arias’ statements. Devon Solis, a vendor selling plants and clothing, remarked, “If Arias was just spreading rumors, he scared a lot of people and cost many of us a significant amount of money.”

In the aftermath of the market’s near-empty weekend, Arias speculated that perhaps the ICE raids were not executed as a means to “exercise” the immigrant community following the warnings issued. He encouraged sharing updates about ICE activities to help keep communities safe during what he described as the “brutal ICE operations” happening under the current administration.
