Egypt Detains Activists Ahead of Gaza March
Recent reports indicate that Egyptian authorities took into custody numerous anti-Israel activists after a planned demonstration in Gaza was obstructed last Thursday.
As many as 200 activists were reportedly detained. Egyptian immigration officials in Cairo seized the passports of European individuals attempting to participate in what was termed a “global march to Gaza.” Meanwhile, other activists, allowed to stay in the country, attempted to march toward Gaza, resulting in clashes with local residents. The locals reportedly resorted to using clubs and throwing water bottles while the activists staged sit-ins at checkpoints, according to information from various sources.
On social media, some pro-Israel activists expressed their views about the incident. One notable commentary suggested that a group of European activists, likened to Greta Thunberg, demanded that Egyptians take action against the siege of Gaza. However, they faced significant backlash from the local Egyptian crowd instead. The outcome left them in custody, with their passports confiscated.
Another user shared on social media that Egyptians had physically confronted and disarmed left-wing activists about to enter Gaza.
Amidst the tensions, Israel is facing increasing pressure to agree to a ceasefire, particularly due to claims of civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict. A study released last December highlighted concerns about the reliability of casualty data from Gaza, with media outlets often criticizing the accuracy of such information.
