Tim Kaine Suggests a War Powers Resolution to Prevent U.S. Support for Conflict with Iran

Resolution Proposed to Limit U.S. Military Action in Iran

Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) introduced a resolution on Monday aimed at restricting U.S. involvement in the war against Iran, emphasizing the need for Congressional approval before any military action is taken.

“A war with Iran should only happen if it’s absolutely necessary for U.S. protection,” he stated. Kaine expressed concern that escalating tensions between Israel and Iran might pull the U.S. into another prolonged conflict.

He further noted, “Americans are not keen on sending troops to engage in yet another endless war in the Middle East. This resolution ensures that any decision to deploy military personnel will be openly discussed and voted on in Congress.”

The resolution underscores that Congress holds the authority to declare war. It specifies that military actions against Iran must be mandated by either a formal declaration of war or explicit Congressional approval before engaging in hostilities, while still allowing the U.S. to defend itself against imminent threats.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) commented that recent events have clarified positions regarding U.S. involvement, implying that a fuller engagement in the Israel-Iran conflict seems imminent.

In her lengthy post on X, Greene argued that true America First advocates seek peace and do not want military personnel to suffer permanently. “We cherish our military, but we don’t want them embroiled in conflicts abroad that do not serve our interests. We’ve spent trillions dealing with the repercussions of wars in the Middle East. I just don’t want to see more violence,” she asserted, also questioning claims regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

In a previous statement, the Director of National Intelligence clarified that Iran is reportedly not pursuing nuclear weapons at this time. Meanwhile, Rosemary Keranick, who directs a Middle East Program at a foreign policy think tank, recently wrote in the New York Times that a conflict with Iran would be disastrous.

Keranick warned that engaging with Iran could lead to a situation similar to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, where U.S. forces could become entrenched in a protracted conflict.

Recalling the history of U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan, she highlighted the significant human cost and stressed the importance of avoiding another war. She noted that it would be wise for former President Trump to resist pressures to intervene in the region.
