Federal Judge Criticizes Trump Administration’s Discrimination
A federal judge has criticized the Trump administration for its policies of racial and LGBTQ discrimination and ordered the reissuance of grants that were discontinued at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
President Trump had previously shut down various grants at the NIH and other agencies, claiming they aligned with far-left ideologies.
On Monday, Judge William Young from Massachusetts stated that it was unlawful to terminate grants based on gender ideology and diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations. He remarked, “I’ve never seen a record of racism being so obvious,” after over 40 years on the bench.
Young instructed the NIH to provide funding for 367 grants that were cut under the new policies of the Trump administration. He expressed reluctance but felt compelled to address what he described as discrimination against the American LGBTQ community.
Lawyers for the affected parties argued that the billion-dollar cuts were made arbitrarily and adversely impacted racial minorities as well as LGBTQ individuals.
While the judge’s order reinstates funding for the specific grants mentioned in the lawsuit, the case will continue through the legal system.
Young noted that although the Supreme Court had dismissed an affirmative case recently, this does not grant the government a right to discriminate.
Reflecting on the situation, he questioned, “Did we fall that low? Are you embarrassed?” He was appointed to the court by Ronald Reagan.
Amid this, Trump has expressed intentions to reform federal government operations, asserting that federal resources should not support Marxist ideologies or social engineering policies he believes waste taxpayer money.
