Six-foot alligator appears at Virginia motel, surprises police in funny video

Gator Encounter at Virginia Motel

A surprising scene unfolded at a motel in Virginia early Monday morning when a gator was seen casually wandering outside. This bizarre event, which was captured in a hilarious video, took place in Fairfax County, roughly 20 miles from Washington, DC.

Hotel guests were startled when they spotted the alligator outside their room, prompting frantic calls to the local police. Responding shortly after midnight, Fairfax County officers were taken aback to find a six-foot reptile roaming the premises.

“Wow! There’s actually a gator out here!” one of the officers exclaimed, seemingly in disbelief.

The officer, attempting to gauge the size of the creature, speculated that it might be around six feet long, thinking, “If it lay next to me, it would be about this size.”

Other onlookers gathered to see the commotion as police began to safely escort the surprisingly calm reptile away from the motel. One curious bystander jokingly offered to take their dog inside to avoid any encounters with the gator, while another insisted they wanted a closer look.

Authorities later revealed that the alligator had escaped from its owner, who was transporting the pet from New York to a zoo in North Carolina. After reuniting the gator with its owner, police were required to lead the unusual duo out of the county.

In Virginia, owning exotic reptiles is considered a misdemeanor violation, as stated in the Virginia Code. Fairfax County also has regulations against exotic animals, reflecting broader concerns about wildlife management in the area.

This peculiar incident isn’t isolated; Virginia has seen its share of wildlife mishaps. Notably, in March, a zoo had to quell rumors about a potentially escaped gorilla that turned out to be a misunderstanding, and there was also an incident last year involving a herd of goats and sheep that disrupted traffic on a Virginia interstate.
