Los Angeles ICE Protests Have Cost the City $20 Million and Still Rising

Costs of Protests Against ICE in Los Angeles

Recent reports indicate that protests and riots against Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) have burdened Los Angeles with nearly $20 million in costs. The heightened anxiety in Los Angeles and other cities escalated last week following President Trump’s ramped-up immigration enforcement strategies.

As of June 16, the expenses for the city had reached around $19.7 million. Notably, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) alone accounted for expenditures totaling $106.9 million. Additionally, repairs needed for City Hall and other public buildings are expected to surpass $780,000.

Authorities have noted that these police-related costs cover expenses only through June 13 and do not include recent disruptions that continued over the weekend.

Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles has attempted to downplay the unrest, shifting focus onto the consequences of Trump’s immigration policies. She expressed, perhaps emphatically, that attacking the immigrant population would harm the economy of Los Angeles.

The financial implications of the protests could intensify the city’s existing budget challenges, especially with rising legal and labor costs and declining tax revenues. Back in 2020, the LAPD incurred $40 million in overtime expenses during the protests following George Floyd’s death, alongside at least $11.9 million tied to settlements related to police actions.

The mayor’s office did not provide any comments when approached by inquiries regarding this matter.

As tensions escalate, Trump has announced plans to deploy 2,000 national security guards and a number of Marines to restore order in Los Angeles. Governor Gavin Newsom has responded by suing the Trump administration, criticizing these actions as an assault on democracy. Nevertheless, a federal appeals court has affirmed Trump’s authority to keep the National Guard in the city.

On Sunday, Trump reiterated that former President Biden’s open border policies would necessitate enhancing deportation efforts in major cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.
