New York City Director Arrested After Court Confrontation
Brad Lander, the New York City Director, was apprehended by federal agents during a court session involving a potential deportation case.
Lander is also running for mayor of New York City in the upcoming primary. His policy proposals include tackling homelessness linked to mental health disorders, addressing climate challenges, and supporting immigrant rights.
The incident occurred at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan, following an immigration hearing. As federal agents approached, Lander engaged with a man, presumably facing deportation. Outside the court, he insisted, “You don’t have the authority to arrest US citizens!”
Footage from the altercation revealed that Lander restrained the individual while federal officers, representing ICE, the FBI, and the Treasury Department, attempted to intercede. Lander allegedly refused to release the man, who, according to reports, had just faced a judge related to immigration allegations.
The situation escalated as Lander shouted, “Show me your warrant! Show me your badge!” while trying to understand the agents’ authority.
In a calm tone, he suggested, “If you show me the judicial warrant, I’ll let him go. I want to see the warrant, then I’ll let it go.” However, agents forcibly separated them and detained both parties as Lander protested their rights.
Lander maintained he was not obstructing but merely standing in the hallway, reiterating that the agents lacked authority to act against him.
In a statement, a Homeland Security official noted that Lander was arrested for obstructing federal officers. The official criticized political figures for undermining law enforcement, emphasizing that no one is above the law.
Lander’s spokesperson claimed that he was “taken into custody by a masked agent from ICE.” Meanwhile, Lander’s wife posted an update on social media, stating, “Brad is still in ICE custody,” and expressed gratitude for the support from friends and allies.
As of now, the Department of Homeland Security has not confirmed the man’s legal status or any related allegations.
