Chicago Mayor Raises Concerns Over Potential Federal Forces

On Monday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his worries about the potential deployment of federal forces in the city, relating to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. He described the move as unconstitutional and hinted at the possibility of legal challenges.

During a press conference at city hall, Johnson criticized the idea as a threat to civil liberties and local governance. His comments were a reaction to reports of a federal program aimed at enhancing immigration enforcement in sanctuary cities like Chicago.

Johnson stated, “This is just another example of his Animus workers.” He emphasized the importance of respecting the Constitution and noted that, if asked, the President seems uninterested in cooperating with city leaders.

These remarks were made following statements from Trump administration officials, suggesting Chicago could be next on the list for heightened enforcement, especially in light of recent protests and sanctuary policies.

One official noted, “The president is ready to prove that no one is beyond the law.”

Johnson’s comments came after a series of protests against ICE and Trump’s policies in Chicago, mirroring demonstrations across the country. He declared, “We’ll continue to resist.”

Furthermore, he asserted, “Whether it’s in the courts, on the streets, or through public policy, we’re going to stand up for our workers.”

Mary Richardson Laurie, the city’s corporate lawyer, pointed out the legal constraints surrounding such actions. She remarked, “We believe that it is a violation of the Constitution to deploy the powers of the military absent national security concerns.”

Last week, Johnson urged Chicagoans to “stoop” against ICE, labeling their enforcement efforts as “terrorism.”

Since August 2022, Chicago has welcomed over 51,000 immigrants from the southern border, many of whom have been relocated from Texas by Governor Greg Abbott.

The current tension follows Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s defense of the state’s sanctuary policy in Congress last week.

The mayor’s office did not respond immediately to requests for further comments.
